Dr Caroline Davies

Academic background in scientific research and teaching in higher education. Extensive experience as a manager of academic guidance services and services for disabled students in higher education and in governance in the schools sector.

Caroline has personal experience within higher education in:

  • design and delivery of undergraduate courses and supervision of students;
  • developing provision, policy and procedures for disabled students;
  • strategic and operational management of services for disabled students;
  • managing change: reorganisation and amalgamation of services;
  • project management;
  • staff management and recruitment;
  • design and production of information and guidance resources;
  • delivering staff development and contributing to professional development programmes;
  • the use of assistive technologies to support learning;
  • advising on curriculum access;
  • incorporating considerations of accessibility into the development of institutional initiatives and resources.

As a consultant, Caroline has over four years full time experience of providing a range of consultancy services including:

  • undertaking institutional disability audits of policies, procedures and practice, including those relating to learning and teaching;
  • the development of audit tools to evaluate learning and teaching and service delivery,(eg libraries and students union facilities);
  • the evaluation of HE disability projects and UK-wide initiatives and services;
  • acting as a critical friend, for example in action planning and in service review;
  • providing guidance and support in relation to policy development and DDA legislation, including the development of Disability Equality Schemes (DES);
  • obtaining the views of disabled people through the development and analysis of questionnaires and the facilitation of focus groups;
  • development and delivery of professional development;
  • supporting institutions in recruiting staff to specialist disability posts;
  • delivering keynote presentations and workshops at national conferences in relation to access and inclusion for disabled learners;
  • research, authoring and report writing.

Caroline has developed particular experience of working with small specialist HEIs in the fields of art and design and the performing arts. She has recently written a publication for Action on Access, "Embedding success: learning from disability projects in higher education" (2008), which draws out and celebrates some of the successful and inclusive practice developed during the HEFCE-funded Strand Two disability projects (2003-05) in small specialist HEIs. Caroline was also co-author of the on-line Open University staff development resource for academic staff, Making your teaching inclusive (HEFCE-funded project).

Tina Elliott

Experience in both business and education sectors. Employed in further and higher education as a manager and an academic. Worked as a National Co-ordinator for the HEFCE and DELNI funded National Disability Team for 4 and a half years and currently contracted to Action on Access, the HEFCE National Co-ordination Team for Widening Participation. Over four year freelance consultancy experience in the higher education sector. Tina has expertise in:

  • managing change in an HE context;
  • project management at local, regional and a national level;
  • managing collaboration and partnership across HEI;
  • strategic and operational management of services for disabled students in HE and FE;
  • developing self assessment tools for reviewing policy practice and provision to include disabled students;
  • undertaking disability and equality audits and supporting self reviews;
  • acting as a critical friend, for example in action planning and in review of provision;
  • providing guidance and support in relation to policy development and DDA legislation, including the development of Disability Equality Schemes (DES) and action planning;
  • delivering professional development programmes;
  • developing information and guidance resources;
  • research, authoring and report writing;
  • learning and teaching within an FE and HE context;
  • curriculum design and delivery;
  • mentoring initiatives within HE;
  • quality assurance relating to inspection, review and monitoring.
